Method Developed to Test Plastic for Degradation 'Without Destroying' It

  • Conventional evaluation method for plastic degradation state
  • Nondestructive testing of polypropylene
  • Advantages of non-destructive plastic degradation testing

Conventional evaluation methods for plastic degradation

Conventional methods of evaluating "how much plastic has deteriorated? Conventional methods for evaluating the degree of degradation of plastics require the destruction of the sample by mechanical testing.

In this method, a sample of plastic is pulled by a machine, and the degree of degradation is evaluated based on the amount of force with which the plastic is destroyed (since the plastic does not stretch much when it is degraded, the degree of degradation is inspected based on how short the plastic is destroyed).

Due to its characteristics, it was not possible to test the degree of degradation of plastics used as parts of machines, etc. without disassembling them.

Nondestructive testing of polypropylene

In July 2020, a method was developed to evaluate the degree of deterioration of polypropylene in a non-destructive manner.
The method is to irradiate polypropylene with near-infrared light in a certain area.

A sensor detects the near-infrared light that penetrates the polypropylene, and measures the near-infrared spectrum.

This method is based on the fact that polypropylene absorbs near-infrared light as it deteriorates, and the degree of deterioration of polypropylene can be estimated by measuring the near-infrared spectrum detected after transmission.

Advantages of Nondestructive Plastic Degradation Testing

The practical application of non-destructive inspection methods for the degree of deterioration of plastics has brought about various advantages.

First of all, it is possible to inspect parts while they are still in use.
Conventional mechanical inspection requires the removal of the part from the object in order to pull the plastic part.

The new inspection method uses light irradiation, which has the advantage that the part can be inspected while it is still in use.
The second advantage is that the part can continue to be used without being destroyed.

Mechanical inspection by pulling destroys the plastic parts, so they could not be used continuously afterwards.
With the new inspection method, the plastic part to be inspected retains its shape and can be used continuously.
This has the advantage that it can be used not only for in-use parts, but also for selecting plastic parts that are to be recycled.
